Doriano Romboni dies at Sic Supermoto Day
Doriano Romboni, the 44-year-old former motorcycle racer, died on Saturday after sustaining serious injuries during a crash at the Sic Supermoto Day. The supermoto race is held in Latina, Italy, and is run in memory of the late Marco Simoncelli. The crash occurred when Romboni collided with fellow Italian Gianluca Vizziello during a practice session for the race.
Romboni’s Grand Prix career spanned nine years, from 1989 to 1998. He amassed six career victories and numerous podium finishes in 125, 250 and 500 GP classes. He then moved to World Superbike competition, but injuries put an end to his professional racing career.
Following Romboni’s death, the FMI (Italian Motorcycle Federation) cancelled the rest of the Sic Supermoto Day event. Paolo Sesti, president of the FMI, said, “We have cancelled the event as a sign of mourning and respect for Doriano and his family, to whom we show our support at this difficult time. In losing Doriano we lose a generous rider, a highly valued personality and a great coach who was dearly loved and appreciated by everyone involved in international motorcycling.”
