Thermahelm’s Halo Cools Brain on Impact

A high tech helmet, designed to keep the wearer’s brain cool after an accident, has been unveiled at the Carole Nash Motorcycle Live 2010 show in Birmingham this week. UK manufacturer Thermalhelm claims its Halo helmet could save hundreds of lives a year by mitigating brain swelling in accidents involving head injuries (they occur in eighty percent of all motorcyclist fatalities claims the helmet maker). According to the Thermahelm, conventional styrofoam-lined helmets act like ovens causing post accident brain temperatures to reach a potentially fatal threshold. The Halo on the other hand triggers an endothermic chemical reaction inside its lining at the moment of impact, immediately cooling the rider’s head to control brain swelling, a key factor in life threatening head injuries.
