Motorcycles that can be ridden off the beaten path span the alphabet from Aprilia to Zero, and for 2014 we have some tasty additions for your consideration. With new bikes from Honda, KTM, BMW, and other manufacturers (yes, including Aprilia and Zero), the timely return of some old favourites, and an on-going list of continuing models, there are plenty to choose from across the model range. Off-road bikes continue to evolve, engines get more powerful and smoother, suspension gets more supple and stronger, electronics get more useful, seats get more comfortable, and accessory lists grow larger every year. And whether your tastes run to pure dirt-only models or continent crossers with a yen for trails, there’s lots to admire here. From 50 cc beginner bikes for tykes to 1200 cc bruisers with room for the kitchen sink (useful, after a day in the dirt), the range and quality of off-road, dual-sport, adventure-touring, and supermoto motorcycles is exhaustive. So sit back, put your feet up on some pegs, and spend some happy time with this year’s alphabet. You’ll develop a whole new way of seeing the great outdoors.

Yamaha YZ85 The smallest YZ was last redesigned in 2002, receiving a displacement boost to adhere to the larger class limit for what was formerly the 80 cc motocross division. The YZ85’s engine uses crankcase reed valve induction, a flat-slide Keihin carburetor and a close-ratio 6-speed transmission. The semi-double cradle steel frame comes with a detachable subframe for easy maintenance. The 36 mm inverted fork can be tuned for compression and rebound damping, while Monocross rear suspension is fully adjustable.

Yamaha TT-R110E The TT-R110E was introduced in 2008 and has remained largely unchanged through 2014. It features a 110 cc carburetted, air-cooled, 4-stroke single that’s reliable, smooth and economical. Electric start, 4-speed gearbox with automatic clutch, modest 670 mm seat height (due in part to its 14-inch front and 12-inch rear wheels), and light 72 kg weight make the 110E an excellent bike for beginners. YZ-inspired graphics and number plates should please the kids, while a key-operated ignition switch provides piece of mind for parents.

Yamaha TT-R125LE The TT-R125LE is a recreational off-roader powered by an air-cooled, 124 cc, 2-valve single-cylinder engine. Fueling comes via a Mikuni VM20 carburetor, and the 5-speed gearbox uses a heavy-duty clutch. The bike features electric start (with manual kick start as well). The TT-R125LE’s Monocross shock is fully adjustable, while its Showa fork is 4-position preload adjustable. YZ-F-inspired bodywork makes this look like a real racer, though the engine’s broad, torquey powerband makes it a novice-friendly off-road machine.

Yamaha YZ125 / YZ250 With just a handful of exceptions, 2-stroke motocrossers have faded from the lineups of the Big Four to the point of near extinction, but Yamaha’s mid-sized 2-stroke YZs are back again for 2014. Subtle changes to the seat cover and chain were some of the updates implemented several years ago, along with a new 48 mm inverted fork, revised Monocross linkage lever ratio, new shock valving, lightweight wave-style brake rotors and shorter front brake lever. Great go-between bikes for racers too big for 85s but too small for bigger 4-stroke machines.

It features a 223 cc single with electric start, 6-speed gearbox and a steel frame. A non-adjustable 36 mm fork and Monocross rear suspension with preload-adjustable shock provide adequate wheel travel for off-road shenanigans, while a front 220 mm disc brake enhances stopping power. Both engines have been revised and are now fuel injected, featuring broad powerbands and improved high-rpm performance. A new and more compact aluminum frame centralizes mass, and both bikes receive completely redesigned exhaust units. Suspension systems have also been revised to complement the new frame. Dual Sport

BMW G650GS / G650GS Sertão The single-cylinder 650GS and Sertão are differentiated by their preferences: with a 780 mm seat height,19-inch front wheel, and the option of reducing its claimed 48 hp output, the G650GS is more street than dirt; with a 21-inch front hoop, 860 mm seat height, and about 40 more mm of suspension travel, the Sertão likes getting dirty. Both have switchable ABS and are chain driven. A 900 mm seat on the Sertão and 770 and 820 mm seats on the GS are options. A nice, light and nimble bike with dual-purpose capabilities.

Honda CRF250L Honda’s 250 cc dual purpose model is powered by a retuned version of the CBR250 single, but is given wider gearing, a narrower throttle body, and a longer and narrower header pipe for better low-end power delivery. A 43 mm Showa inverted fork and Pro-Link rear shock handle suspension duties and give plenty of travel. Seat height is 875 mm and the bike has 255 mm of ground clearance. Honda claims this one has an ideal mix of on-road and off-road qualities so that compromises are minimal in both environments.

Honda XR650L Honda’s 650 dual sport retains the best characteristics of the Baja-winning XR600 but was bumped 50 cc in size and given a steel gas tank in place of plastic. The air-cooled, carburetor-fed single may appear dated, but comes up with plenty of torque in the low-rpm range where it’s most likely to be needed, starts with a push-button, and can easily handle expressway duties. The 940 mm seat height is not to be sneered at, but the XR650L is light, nimble, comfortable, and more capable than some other so-called “dual sports.”

Kawasaki KLX250S The only change for this year’s KLX250S is a considerable price cut—$700 to be exact. Conceived as a road-going version of the KLX300R, the pavement-friendly 250S keeps plenty of the character, performance and off-road ability of its cousin. Suspension is fully adjustable and that DOHC engine produces a wide torque band. CC editor Neil Graham likes the 250S because it keeps his ass in the saddle and out of the shrubbery. That reduced price tag is also appealing, and may cause more riders to go green (though it comes in black too).

Kawasaki KLR650 Kawasaki’s staple dual-sport KLR650 is powered by a liquid-cooled 651 cc single that should provide steady service for a very long time. Updates for 2014 include a redesigned seat and stiffer suspension (both front and rear) to make the bike more comfortable and better suited for on-road riding. But don’t worry; you can still get dirty. This do-it-all bike is a favourite of long-distance travellers for its comfort, reliability and ease of maintenance. KTM 350 EXC-F / 500 EXC The street-legal 350 EXC-F and 500 EXC are both powered by 4-stroke singles and were given extensive updates in 2012, including engine upgrades, new frame, PDS shock, electric start, and airbox and bodywork improvements. For 2014, the 350 gets an “optimized” DDS clutch with Brembo hydraulics. It has a heavier crankshaft than the 350 SX-F for more uniform power and better traction, and this year, thinner frame tubes for less weight, as does the 500, which has a lightened cylinder head and titanium intake valves.

Aprilia Dorsoduro This year’s supermoto Dorsoduro is powered by a 750 cc V-twin with EFI with ride-by-wire and three performance modes: sport, touring, and rain. Aprilia claims 92 hp. Suspension is handled by a 43 mm upside-down fork and offset monoshock, both adjustable for spring preload and rebound damping. Four-piston radial calipers and wave discs handle braking up front, and two-channel ABS keeps it under control. The instrument cluster is a mix of analog and digital, the handlebar is aluminum, and the clutch is hydraulically operated.
