MotoGP: Pedrosa Now Winningest Racer without a Title

By Cycle CanadaPosted on

Dani Pedrosa took his second victory of the season during the German grand prix at Sachsenring on Sunday, finishing 1.477 seconds ahead of defending champion Jorge Lorenzo, followed closely by current points leader Casey Stoner in third. The Spaniard put on a surprisingly strong performance in just his second race back after missing three rounds due to a broken collarbone.

Early in the race it was Stoner who looked to be on course for another win, after moving from fourth to first during the opening laps. He wasn’t able to shake Lorenzo and Pedrosa though, and the two passed the Australian just after the race’s halfway point. Pedrosa then broke clear of Lorenzo, leaving his Repsol Honda team-mate to fight with the Yamaha rider for second. With one lap remaining it looked like Stoner had done enough to garner the runner-up position, but the reigning world champ made a daring pass in the final corner of the race to snatch second place away from Stoner and cut his championship points advantage to 15.

Pedrosa’s victory at Sachsenring is his 14th in the premier-class, making him the most successful rider yet to win the title. He now sits fifth overall in the 2011 championship, 74 points adrift of Stoner.

The next race takes place on July 24 at Laguna Seca in California.
