Biaggi Dominates with Double at Monza WSBK

By Cycle CanadaPosted on

Max Biaggi dominated aboard his Aprilia RSV4 Factory machine in WSBK at Monza this weekend, taking his first ever superpole on Saturday and then leading both races start to finish on Sunday. Yamaha Sterilgarda teammates James Toseland and Cal Crutchlow kept Biaggi honest in race 1, finishing just 0.247 and 0.297 behind the home town favourite respectively. Points leader Leon Haslam finished 0.958 seconds behind Biaggi, in fourth, with Leon Camier, Biaggi’s teammate, fifth.

Race two though saw the Yamaha duo’s challenge to the Italian veteran come to an end. Toseland was involved in a pile up in the first corner and Crutchlow, a close second up to lap 13, was forced to leave the race with mechanical problems. From then on Biaggi was able to cruise to victory, crossing the finish line over 4.5 seconds ahead of Haslam. Troy Corser rode his BMW S1000RR to third, giving the German manufacturer their first ever podium finish.

Max Biaggi now sits just 3 points behind first place Leon Haslam in the overall standings. Carlos Checa and Jonathan Rae are tied for third. Next race is May 16 in Kyalami, South Africa.
